Detail:The Great Wall of China, one of the greatest wonders of the world, was listed as a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987. Just like a gigantic dragon, the Great Wall winds up and down across deserts, grasslands, mountains and plateaus, stretching approximately 8,851.8 kilometers (5,500 miles) from east to west of China. With a history of more than 2000 years, some of the sections are now in ruins or have disappeared. However, it is still one of the most appealing attractions all around the world owing to its architectural grandeur and historical significance.

ESA's Proba satellite here shows a winding segment of the 7240-km long Great Wall of China situated just northeast of Beijing. The Great Wall's relative visibility or otherwise from orbit has inspired much recent debate.
The 21 hours spent in space last October by Yang Liwei - China's first ever space traveller - were a proud achievement for his nation. The only disappointment came as Liwei informed his countrymen he had not spotted their single greatest national symbol from orbit.

What is for sure is that what the human eye may not be able to see, satellites certainly can. Proba's High Resolution Camera (HRC) acquired this image of the Wall from 600 km away in space. The HRC is a black and white camera that incorporates a miniature Cassegrain telescope, giving it far superior spatial resolution to the human eye.

Construction Period:
About 2,000 years from the Warring States Period (476 BC - 221 BC) to Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)
The Ming fortifications were established in new areas from the Qin walls. They were up to 25 feet (7.6 meters) high, 15 to 30 feet (4.6 to 9.1 meters) wide at the base, and from 9 to 12 feet (2.7 to 3.7 meters) wide at the top (wide enough for marching troops or wagons). At regular intervals, guard stations and watch towers were established.

The Great Wall of China is a series of stone and earthen fortifications in , built, rebuilt, and maintained between the 5th century BC and the 16th century to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire during the rule of successive dynasties. Several walls, referred to as the Great Wall of China , were built since the 5th century BC. The most famous is the wall built between 220 BC and 200 BC by the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang; little of it remains; it was much farther north than the current wall, which was built during the Ming Dynasty.
Todays New Age of Great Wall
Why Geat Wall was Built?
The Great Wall was key to protecting agriculture and resisting cavalry of the Huns and other warrior tribes from the north. The advantages of the enormous barrier diminished with the advancement of gunpowder and other weaponry.
The wall was originally built of stone, wood, grass and earth. In the Ming Dynasty bricks were produced in kilns set up along the wall. The bricks were transported by men carrying them on their backs, donkeys, mules and even goats had a brick tied to their head before being driven up a mountain.

Amman, the modern and ancient capital of Jordan, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the World. The city's modern buildings blend with the remnants of ancient civilizations. Amman's modern history began in the late 19th Century, when the Ottomans resettled a colony of Circassian emigrants in 1878. As the Great Arab Revolt progressed and the State of Transjordan was established, Emir Abdullah ibn Al-Hussein founder of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan made Amman his capital in 1921. Since then, Amman has grown rapidly into a modern, thriving metropolis of well over two million people. Aqaba Port is very Near .
Wadi Musa
Hidden amid the dramatic rock formations of Wadi Musa in Jordan, lies the ancient Nabataean city of Petra. Its magnificent facades were carved out of the red-hued rock more than 2,000 years ago; today it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and in 2007 was voted one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.

Despite successive attempts by the Seleucid king Antigonus, the Roman emperor Pompey and Herod the Great to bring Petra under the control of their respective empires, Petra remained largely in Nabataean hands until around 100AD, when the Romans took over. It was still inhabited during the Byzantine period, when the former Roman Empire moved its focus east to Constantinople, but declined in importance thereafter.

The Crusaders constructed a fort there in the 12th century, but soon withdrew, leaving Petra to the local people until the early 19th century, when it was rediscovered by the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812.
Wadi Rum Petra, the world wonder, is without a doubt Jordan’s most valuable treasure and greatest tourist attraction. It is a vast, unique city, carved into the sheer rock face by the Nabataeans, an industrious Arab people who settled here more than 2000 years ago, turning it into an important junction for the silk, spice and other trade routes that linked China, India and southern Arabia with Egypt, Syria, Greece and Rome.
Petra Archaeological Park

The Petra Archaeological Park (PAP) covers a 264 dunum (264,000 square metres) area within Wadi Musa, which is considered a tourism and archaeological site, and a World Heritage Site registered on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1985. The area encompasses a breathtaking landscape of pink-hued rock mountains, the focus of which is the amazing ancient Nabataean city of Petra, which was carved into the rock more than 2,000 years ago.
Interesting Sites:
Bab Al Siq
After entering the gate in Petra, and before you reach the Siq, you walk through an area called ‘Bab Al Siq’, Arabic for gateway to the ‘siq’. There are several monuments of note along the way starting with three massive Djinn or god blocks, the Obelisk Tomb and the Triclinium below it with an ancient bilingual inscription.
Petra Visit, The oldest City Tours
The Dam
An 88m-long tunnel was cut out of the rock by the Nabataeans to divert flash floods from the Siq.
The Siq
This is a narrow gorge, more than a kilometer long, which leads visitors into Petra, opening up at the Treasury. As well as presenting a dramatic entryway into Petra, many relics can be seen in the Siq including a paved road and Nabataean sacred stones.
The Treasury (Al Khazna)
The Siq opens up onto Petra’s most magnificent façade - the Treasury or Al Khazna. It stands at almost 40 meters high and is intricately decorated with friezes, statues and other features carved from the rock. There is a funerary urn at the top of the Treasury which according to local legend conceals pharaoh’s treasures. Although the original function is still a mystery, the Khazna is believed by many archaeologists to be the mausoleum of King Aretas IV (9BC- 40AD).

The Street of Facades
This is a row of monumental Nabataean tombs carved in the southern cliff face of the outer Siq. The facades are crowned with corner crow-steps, pilasters and cavettos.
The Theatre
This was carved into the side of the mountain at the foot of the High Place of Sacrifice during the reign of King Aretas IV (9BC-40AD). It consists of three rows of seats separated by passageways and seven stairways ascend the auditorium and can accommodate 4000 spectators. The back wall of the stage was rebuilt by the Romans.
The Nymphaeum
This is a semi-circular public fountain near the junction of Wadi Musa and Wadi al-Mataha. Six Nabataean columns decorated the façade and it received water from a tank located on the opposite side of the valley. It is shaded by a wild pistachio tree that is 450 years old.
The Colonnaded Street
The street was originally constructed by the Nabataeans and later refurbished after the Roman annexation. It starts at the monumental steps of the Upper Market and and includes a the remains of a Nabataean monumental gate.
Great Temple

The Great Temple Complex represents one of the major archaeological and architectural components of central Petra and is estimated to cover an area of 7000 square meters. The Great Temple is 28m wide and 40m long. The style and quality of the temple’s elaborate floral friezes and limestone capitals suggest that the sanctuary was constructed by the end of the first century BC by the Nabataeans who combined their native traditions with the classical spirit. The Great Temple was in use until some point in the late Byzantine Period.
Qasr Al Bint
The monument is almost square (and is set on a podium. It was the main temple of Petra and is still standing to a height of 23m. The temple is approached by a flight of marble steps. It is believed that the goddess al-Uzza/Aphrodite and Baal shaman were the main gods of this temple, which dates to the first half of the 1st century AD.
The Columbarium
This is a cave at the foot of the Al-Habis Mountain. Many rectangular niches were carved in the back wall and then plastered. The niches usually contained the ashes of the dead.
Al Habis Mountain:
This was occupied by a medieval fort, which was originally built by the Crusaders in AD1115 and was visited by Sultan Baybars in AD1276.
The Lion Biclinium
This can be seen on the way to ad Deir; it is so-named because of two lions carved on both sides of the entrance. The façade is intricately decorated and there are two benches inside and a baetyl in a niche is carved to the left of the doorway.

Ad Deir, or the Monastery, is one of the largest monuments in Petra. It was modeled on the Treasury. The interior is occupied by two side benches and an altar against the rear wall. This space was used for meetings of religious associations and the Monastery dates to the early 2nd century AD. The hall was later re-used as a Christian chapel and crosses were carved in the rear wall, which is how the structure got its name.
Viewpoint
A short way beyond Ad Deir, visitors can enjoy magnificent views over the arid, rocky mountains that stretch west into the horizon in the direction of Wadi Araba.
High Place of Sacrifice

This cult complex includes a rectangular courtyard with benches and an altar. There is also a sacrificial platform with a carved circular basin to receive the blood of sacrificed animals and a water basin for purification.
The Two Obelisks
These are two 7-meter-high freestanding obelisks carved from the rock which represent the Nabataean goddess Dushara.
The Lion Fountain
A huge lion is carved out of the sandstone rock on the way to the High Place. A channel carved above the lions head received water from a spring and the water collected in a basin and flowed to a large cistern at the foot of the mountain.

The basic detail of Aghion Oros or mt athos so it is best and CompleteTravel Guide 2012 Road Map
1-MT Athos Location:
Mount Athos (Greek Άγιο Όρος, "Holy Mountain"), is a mountainous peninsula in northern Greece. It is home to 20 Eastern Orthodox monasteries and forms an autonomous state under Greek sovereignty. Only monks are allowed to live on Athos and the current population numbers around 1,400.
The Mount Athos peninsula is the easternmost "leg" of the larger Chalkidiki peninsula. It protrudes into the Aegean Sea for some 60 km at a width between 7 to 12 km. It covers an area of about 390 km², with the actual Mount Athos and its steep, densely forested slopes reaching up to 2,033 m.
The seas around the end of the peninsula can be dangerous. Xerxes I had a channel excavated across the isthmus to allow the passage of his invasion fleet in 483 BC. Latest Image 2012.

Because of it's isolation Mount Athos has remained one of the most unspoiled parts of Greece. The landscape is stunning and wild, with small green valleys and gorges, well wooded peaks interspersed with precipitous ravines and an inaccessible coastline. Small streams of crystal clear water run free under the deep shade of the chestnut trees. Here and there in this wilderness are the fortified walls of the monasteries, with small vegetable plots around them, encircled by a silver-green sea of the olive groves. Hidden among the greenery and the impassable gorges, perched in the most unexpected positions is the white speckle of a little hut were a hermit spends his days in solitude and contemplation.

It is a land where myth is entwined with history, miracles mingle with reality. Savage mountain scenery reflecting on the dark blue sea create that essential framework of isolation in a peaceful, solitary world, chosen by the hermits for their monastic state.

3-History

Mt. Athos as a monastic community was formally founded in 963, when the monk Athanasios established the monastery of Great Lavra, which is still the largest and most prominent of the 20 monasteries. It enjoyed the protection of the emperors of the Byzantine Empire during the following centuries and its wealth and possessions grew considerably.
In the 13th century, the Fourth Crusade brought new Roman Catholic overlords which forced the monks to seek protection from Pope Innocent III until the restoration of the Byzantine Empire. It was raided by Catalan mercenaries in the 14th century, a century that also saw the theological conflict over the hesychasm practised on Mount Athos and defended by Gregory Palamas.
The Byzantine Empire collapsed in the 15th century and the Muslim Ottoman Empire took over. The Turks taxed the monasteries heavily, but for the most part left them alone.
The population of monks and their wealth declined over the next centuries, but was revitalized around the 19th century by the donations and new arrivals from other Eastern Orthodox countries, such as Russia, Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia. Each country came to exert its influence on individual monasteries.

In 1912, during the First Balkan War, the Ottomans were forced out and after a brief conflict between Greece and Russia over sovereignty, the peninsula formally came under Greek sovereignty after World War I.
In modern times, Mount Athos monasteries have repeatedly been struck by wildfires, including in August 1990 and in March 2004. Due to the secluded locations of the monasteries and the unavailability of suitable firefighting gear, the damages inflicted by these fires are often considerable.

4-What to See

Politically, the peninsula is essentially self-governed. It consists of 20 main monasteries plus the capital city and administrative centre, Karyes, which is also home to a Greek governor. The 20 sovereign monasteries, in the order of their place in the hierarchy, are:
  1. Great Lavra (Μεγίστη Λαύρα, Megísti Lávra)
  2. Vatopedi (Βατοπέδι or Βατοπαίδι)
  3. Iviron (Ιβήρων; ივერთა მონასტერი, iverta monasteri) - built by Georgians

  20. Konstamonitou (Κωνσταμονίτου)
In addition to the monasteries there are 12 sketes, smaller communities of monks, as well as many (solitary) hermitages throughout the peninsula. The main sketes are:
  • Kafsokalyvia
  • Lakkoskete (Lacu, Sfântul Dumitru - Romanian)
  • New Skete
  • Prodromos (Prodromu, Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul - Romanian)
  • Provata
  • Saint Anne's Skete
  • Saint Basil's Skete
  • Skete of Iviron
  • Skete of Koutloumousiou
  • Skete of Pantokratoros
  • Skete of Vatopedi
  • Skete of Xenophontos
  • Saint Andrew's Skete also known as Saray (Σαράι)
In order to reduce temptation, women, beardless boys and eunuchs are completely barred from the peninsula. Even female domestic animals (with the exception of cats who control rodents and hens who provide the yolk needed for the paint used in iconography) are forbidden.
However, during the Greek Civil War, Athos did shelter refugees including women and girls, and the rule against beardless boys is not strictly enforced.

5-Getting There

Visits to the peninsula are possible for men who aren't monks or even Greek Orthodox, but they need special permission in advance. Cruises around the peninsula are available to all, providing both men and women a glimpse into the secluded life of the monks of Mt. Athos.
6-Political Situation
mt athos (Mount Athos) Map

The Holy Mount is a self- governed part of the Greek state, subject to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its political aspect and to the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinopole as regards its religious aspect.
It has been divided into twenty self- governed territories. Each territory consists of a cardinal monastery and some other monastic establishments that surround it (cloisters, cells, cottages, seats, hermitages).
7-Mount Athos Visiting Rules
Basic Conditions for Admission to Mount Athos In accordance with a "Chryssobul" (edict) issued by the Byzantine Emperor Constantine Monomahos, in 1060 A.D. which still remains valid, conditions for entering the territory of Mt. Athos are as follows:

Kabah is a Mayan site on the Yucatán Peninsula connected to nearby Uxmal by a ceremonial causeway. Its buildings date from about the 9th century and are in the Puuc style of architecture. Kabah is best known for its extraordinary palace that is completely covered in masks of the hook-nosed rain god Chac.
Kabah is situated 140 km from Merida in the State of Yucatan by the highway 261 in Mexico.

History of Kabah 2012

This area was inhabited by the 3rd century BC, but the principal buildings on the site date mostly from the 9th century AD (a sculpted date of 857 was found on one of the doorjambs). Kabah was abandoned by around 1200.
Not much is known about the history of Kabah, but It seems to have been a dependency of the great city of Uxmal. The two centers are linked by a sacbé, a Mayan "white road" used for ceremonial purposes.
The site was first explored in the mid-19th century by John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood and the first systematic digs were carried out by Teobert Maler towards the end of the century. Later somewhat neglected by archaeologists, investigation of Kabah resumed in 1990.
A program began in 2003 to clear and restore more buildings and archeological excavations continue under the direction of Ramón Carrasco.

Since 1993, the 2470-acre site that includes the Kabah ruins has been a designated conservation area (Parque Estatal). The ruins extend for a considerable distance on both sides of the highway and many of the more distant structures are little visited; others are still overgrown with forest.
A sacbé, or Mayan ceremonial causeway, links Kabah with Uxmal. It is a raised pedestrian walkway 5 meters wide with ceremonial arches at each end.
All the buildings excavated so far at Kabah are in the traditional Puuc style, but they have also revealed unusual features attributed to Chenes influence.
The style called Puuc is named after a string of low hills that extend from western Campeche into the state of Yucatán. Puuc sites are very numerous and clearly were the focal point for Maya artistic and intellectual culture in this area. Typical characteristics of the Puuc style include (according to Encyclopædia Britannica):
  • facings of thin squares of limestone veneer over a cement-and-rubble core;
  • bootshaped vault stones;
  • decorated cornices around columns in doorways;
  • engaged or half-columns repeated in long rows; and
  • lavish use of stone mosaics in upper facades, emphasizing sky-serpent faces with long, hook-shaped noses, as well as frets and latticelike designs of crisscrossed elements.
The most notable structure at Kabah is the Palace of the Masks or Codz Poop (meaning "Rolled Matting"), which has a facade covered in hundreds of stone masks of the hook-nosed rain god Chac. This massive repetition of a single set of elements is unusual in Maya art and makes for an impressive sight.
